Alpha Estate Xinomavro Vieilles Vignes Barba Yannis 2015 Macedonia
This really interesting Xinomavro from a high lying single vineyard planted in 1921. A complex nose of cherries and dark plums with a Barolo like tarry black fruits nicely balanced tannin structure and minerality from the sandy clay soils give it real length the new oak aging, very impressive.
Xinomavro’s literal translation is acid black and many that we tried certainly lived up to its name but this was a revelation. Alpha Estate run by Angelo Latridis is situated in Amyndeo in the cool, north west of Greek Macedonia near the Albanian border. This really interesting wine comes from a high lying single vineyard, 650m, planted in 1921. A complex nose of cherries and dark plums with a Barolo like tarry black fruits nicely balanced tannin structure and minerality from the sandy clay soils give it real length the new oak aging, 24 months, does not impinge. Really impressive
