Founded in 1962 San Marzano is the best co-operative in Puglia. Their attractive well priced il Pumo Negroamaro has spicy black berries and ripe plum fruit with hints of dark chocolate and herbs and perky acidity to balance. Negroamaro is having resurgence in Puglia having been the major victim of the EU sponsored vine pull campaign of the 1980’s, while successful in reducing the wine lake it also led to the grubbing up of some precious old vines. Il Pumo or Pine cone is the iconic image used in sculpture and ceramics across southern Italy.This drinks well on it's own but it's juicy nature makes it a perfect foil to Pizza and tomato based pasta dishes, give it some air and it fills out beautifully.
