The small AC of Savennieres situated on a curve of the River Loire in Anjou is one of the hidden gems of the wine world, producing some of the finest examples of what Chenin Blanc can offer.
Domaine Closel run by Evelyne de Pontbriand is one of the best domains there, she farms organically and Bio dynamically her three vineyards. This comes from Les Caillardieres planted onshist and sand with vines averaging 40 years of age picked 10 days later than normal to give richness and depth, fermented using natural yeasts and aged for a year and a half in 420lt barrels ,5-10% new each year.
With a pale golden colour and a lovely nose of flowers, ripe apples and hints of honey and a long complex palate of red apples, melon and pear with a nice balance of acidity roundness and texture from the oak, delicious.
