Domaine Deux Roches Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes 2019
Deux Roche’s lovely old vine Pouilly-Fuisse comes from parcels around the feet of the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, augmented by plots in chalky soils of Chaintré and Fuissé.
Domaine Deux Roches is named after the two escarpments which dominate the skyline of the Pouilly-Fuissé region. The two rocks of Solutré and Vergisson were used by prehistoric man to drive wild beast up and over their cliffs to their deaths, testified by the many remains underneath.
The domaine, purely devoted to Chardonnay, is run by Jean-Luc Terrier and Christian Collovray and their children, they also own and run a small domaine, Altugnac, in the Languedoc as well.
Their lovely old vine Pouilly-Fuisse comes from parcels around the feet of the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson, augmented by plots in chalky soils of Chaintré and Fuissé. Fermentation is in barrel and 20% in 600l oak Demi-Muids with only 10% new oak, aged on their lees till the following spring. Minimal SO2 is used only at bottling to retain the flavours and aromas.
In the vineyards they practice minimal spraying and use organic fertilizers, Christian Collovray preferring to be hands on in the vineyard setting traps for insects and using careful canopy management, planting grasses between vines for green compost and water retention and the planting of hedges for diversity, added to by the recent addition of 16 beehives amongst the vines. In the Cellar Jean-Luc Terrier oversees the vinification, run in a highly sustainable manner, recycling and decontaminating all water used, solar panels give power and insulation keeps the cellar a constant temperature.
