Vachnadziani Saperavi Classical 2020
The Saperavi Classical does not disappoint on the colour front with an impressive ripe dark berry nose, the palate is more serious with structured tannins to the mulberry and bramble fruit
Georgia is the birthplace of winemaking with roots going back 8000 years, it is thought the word wine comes from the Georgian word gvino. Over 500 different grape varieties are grown there many of them unique in the well-tempered climate. Such as the Saperavi a red skinned and, unusually, pink fruited grape which imparts a glass and shirt staining dark colour. The Saperavi Classical does not disappoint on the colour front with an impressive ripe dark berry nose, the palate is more serious with structured tannins to the mulberry and bramble fruit and probably requires some food but it is an impressive mix of old school and new winemaking and will not disappoint. Just mind your shirt!
The Vachnadziani Winery is an old Soviet Collective winery that has been modernized and enlarged under private ownership With a range of wines sourced from two regions of Imereti in central Georgia and Kakheti in the east, where this Saperavi hails from. This is aged in tank thus the riper fruited nose rather the traditional method of aging in Qvevri large clay amphora.
